Evan Davenport
Age: 12
Middle School Student

"Evan began taekwon-do  because we thought that it would give him
both confidence in himself and promote his physical awareness and
prowess. Most importantly, we wanted to find something that Evan could
really love to do and could really be good at from a relatively young
age.

"Evan has derived great confidence in himself, strongly developed his
physical skills, and has synthesized Tae Kwon Do discipline into his
daily life. His has great physical self-esteem, is perhaps one of the
strongest distance runners in his age group in a large school, and has
been extremely confident in moving from an elementary school that he
attended for five years to a new midle school in which he knew
virtually no one. Any "testing" of his character by class bullies was
quickly put to rest by non-violent means. Also, he gets excellent
grades, receiving only one B in all of his classes now in two quarters.

'He is very disciplined in school about getting his homework done on time
and self-motivated. He welcomes new challenges and doesn't back down.
His teachers have taken us aside to say they consider him to be a leader
because he is respectful of others and gently corrects them if they are
wrong... In short, I think Evan has really taken the five tenets to heart
and incorporated them well into his life.

"As a musician, I think the most valuable lesson that Evan has learned to
do is practice. He has learned that he must do his best today so he can
be better tomorrow.  In this culture of quick albeit superficial
rewards, it's hard to find an area where children can learn about the
virtues of repetition and constant self-examination and self-evaluation.

"Traditional Taekwon-do  has provided Evan with a grounding
in being with others of all ages, abilities, races, walks of life, all
pursuing a common discipline. This has been perhaps one of the best
aspects of Mr. Johnson's school.  It's grounded him in an environment of mutual
respect, and also a diverse group of really great people."--Gary
Davenport, Evan's father.
