Registration still open for July summer camp

Space remains for the kids summer camp led by 3rd Dan Elaine Powell July 11 to 15. This camp is open to all taekwon-do students ages 6 to 12 and costs only $75 for the week.

Summer Beach campout/workout - spaces still available

There still are camping spaces available for the beach campout and workout at Cape Lookout State Park July 16 and 17. Cost is $10 per person and there are discounts for families. Cape Lookout is 11 miles past Tillamook, about 90 minutes from Portland. All students, including beginners, are welcome, as well as their friends and family. 

We have a workout Saturday afternoon followed by a potluck dinner, and another workout Sunday morning. This is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow taekwon-do students and several of our instructors will be there to offer tips on taekwon-do skills.

Jade Swim is Student of the Month

Blue Belt Jade Swim is Student of the Month for May. Normally, students of the month are recognized for making progress, as reflected in belt promotions. Jade has made great progress in skills but still had many things to improve, so was not premitted to test in June. Showing great maturity for an 11-year-old, she continued to work out hard and has also been very helpful with younger students in class.

Criteria for Student of the Month are the following:

2) Progress in developing skills
3) Adherence to the Five Tenets of Taekwon-do

Eli Patterson wins Grand Champion at karate tournament

Second Dan Eli Patterson entered the Rising Sun Karate Tournament in Oregon City and came away with the grand champion trophy. He won first in sparring and second in forms. He also was named "most inspirational" participant. Mr. Patterson, who teaches the Sunday class at the Belmont do-jang,  trains in both taekwon-do and karate. The Rising Sun Tournament is hosted by Reed Secunda, head instructor at the Shudokan School of Karate in Milwaukie.

Willis and Powell are Students of the Month

Having gained their 3rd Dan (3rd degree black belt), Isaac Willis and Elaine Powell share honors for Student of the Month for March and April.
Both are longtime students and great role models for other students in our do-jang.

Isaac Willis and Elaine Powell Earn 3rd Dan

Traditional Taewkon-do Kwan held its largest black belt test ever on April 9, with ten candidates testing, including Isaac Willis and Elaine Powell for 3rd Dan. Reaching 3rd Dan is a major accomplishment because the test involves challenges not required in previous tests. Only two other students at Traditional Taewkon-do Kwan have reached 3rd Dan (Jack Kidney and Mark Lockie, who are now 4th Dans).

In addition, Dr. Bruce Birk earned his 2nd Dan and the following students achieved 1st Dan: Julion Oddy, Amber Cole, Karenna Hall, Morgan Helms, Rockne Helms and Hana and Jacob Warmflash.

Amber Cole and Karenna Hall are Students of the Month

Amber Cole and her daughter Karenna Hall are Students of the Month for February. Both have been practically living in the do-jang and working hard in prepration for their black belt tests in April.

Jenni Bradley is Student of the Month

Jenni Bradley, who promoted to 2nd degree purple belt in February, is the Student of the Month for January. Jenni is the organizer of our monthly Taekwon-do Talks, which are in-depth discussions of various elements of taekwon-do.

Student of the Year AND Student of the Decade

First Kup Rockne Helms was selected Student of the Year for 2010 and in a special presentation, 4th Dan Mark Lockie was named Student of the Decade.

Rockne, along with his son Morgan, progressed from 1st degree purple belt to black belt candidate in the past year. He participated in every tournament held last year and usually won first place in forms. He has contributed greatly to the do-jang, building the new board holder and helping on construction of the covered bike parking structure. He stepped in this fall to help teach the Buckman SUN classes and now is instructor at the St. Johns Community Center.

Mr. Lockie has been a Traditional Taekwon-do student for half of his 28 years and during that time has set the standard for other students to aspire to in terms of skill and work ethic. He has won nine tournament grand championship trophies. Often sought out as a private lesson instructor, Mr. Lockie also teaches the 6 a.m. Early Bird classes on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Our school has several students who have trained in taekwon-do for a decade or more: Jack Kidney, Jessica Ruch, Isaac Willis and Lynn Hanson. Others who are getting close to a decade of study in taekwon-do are 2nd Dans Elaine Powell and Vance Perry and 1st Dan Vinesh Lal.

Three Earn Black Belts

Paul Shroeder, Kaia Herrin and Sidney Suggs promoted to 1st Dan on Dec. 11. All were students of Ms. Elaine Powell at St. Johns Community Center, but they were seen around the Belmont do-jang a lot the past few months to train consistently for their test. All did a fine job.

Paul, 42,  works for JOIN, a non-profit organization that finds housing solutions for the homeless, and he is working to establish his own non-profit. He also is the current president of the Hwa-Rang Foundation, which provides opportunities for martial arts training to low-income children. Sidney, 13,  is a member of the Portland Theater Brigade and has plaed flute and piano in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Kaia, 11,  attends Portland Village School and is a year-round soccer player for FC Portland, where she mainly is the goalkeeper.

Hwa-Rang Tournament Oct. 16

The 10th annual Hwa-Rang Fountation Invitational Fall Tournament will be on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Sunnyside United Methodist Church.This tournament raises funds for the foundation, which gives low income children opportunities to train in martial arts.

Pre-registration fee for the tournament is $30 for one person. Families participating in the tournament pay $20 for each additional family member. To get this rate, students must register for the tournament by October 8. After that, the cost increases $10 per person.

Trophies will be awarded for adult grand champion, children's grand champion and colored belt forms grand champion. Olympic style medals will be given to winners and participants in sparring, forms, board breaking, build the castle and demonstration teams.

Sunnyside United Methodist Church is at 3520 S.E. Yamhill St., just a few blocks from the Belmont Do-jang. Thanks to Claire Barnett for helping secure this venue.

Carlena Morse is Student of the Month

Carlena Morse, who earned her purple belt in August, is Student of the Month for July. During that month, Carlena attended more classes than an other colored belt, doing double classes on many days.

Ian Watts Earns 2nd Dan

Ian Watts, Traditional Taekwon-do instructor at the St. Johns Community Center, promoted to 2nd Dan (2nd degree black belt) with a distinctive performance. Mr. Watts had been training almost daily--and frequently twice a day--for the past two months.

In black belt testing, students are evaluated on forms, one-on-one sparring for two minutes, three-on-one sparring, knife defenses and board breaking. Students are also given a written knowledge exam, which is turned in prior to the test.

Tournament scheduled for Oct. 16

A tournament benefiting the Hwa-Rang Foundation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Sunnyside United Methodist Church at Southeast 35th Ave. and Yamhill St., just a few blocks from the Belmont do-jang.

This will be a full-day tournament, with competition in non-contact sparring, forms, board breaking, demonstration teams and build the castle. There will be grand champion trophies for adults, children and colored belt forms.

 More information will be forthcoming in a few weeks.

Open Sparring Session to Feature Several Martial Arts Styles

The Belmont do-jang will host an open sparring session from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28. This will be a good time to test sparring skills against practitioners of other martial arts in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Students will spar two-minute rounds with a partner, and then switch partners. When pairing up, you will agree on rules for legal techniques and the amount of contact allowable.

Cost is $5 for this sparring session.

Hanson and Alonso Earn 2nd Dan, Simko 1st Dan

Lynn Hanson and Irina Alonso passed their tests to attain 2nd Dan (second degree black belt) while Evan Simko was promoted to 1st Dan at the black belt test on April 17. Mrs. Hanson is a long-time student and also a highly ranked equestrian. Ms Alonso is an assistant instructor at the Belmont Do-jang. Mr. Simko is an assistant instructor at the Buckman Elementary School SUN taekwon-do program.

In black belt testing, students are evaluated on forms, one-on-one sparring for two minutes, three-on-one sparring, knife defenses and board breaking. Students are also given a written knowledge exam, which is turned in prior to the test.

Charity and Aaron Dunlevy-Todd are Students of the Month

Purple belts Charity and Aaron-Dunlevy-Todd are the students of the month for March. The siblings attended classes nearly every day and made immense progress, while deporting themselves properly, often in adult classes.

First degree blue belt Claire Barnett is student of the month for February. Claire has really stepped up her attendance in the past few months, and it has paid off in solid progress. In addition, she has been very helpful in working with children and lower ranked adults in class.

Ron Milligan is Student of the Year

Ron Milligan, who earned his 1st Dan in August, is Student of the Year at the Belmont Do-jang for 2009. Ron compiled an impressive attendance record both before and after his black belt test, often working out twice a day. He participated in the successful demonstration at Portland State University at the beginning of the year and also competed in every tournament, usually winning first place in forms and sparring. He brought in three new students and has been very helpful in working with students in class. Above all, Ron has embodied all of the Five Tenets throughout his time in taekwon-do.

Results from White Tiger Tournament

Traditional Taekwon-do Kwan students did well at the White Tiger Taekwon-do Tournament at East Portland Community Center. Second Dan Isaac Willis won the adult all-around grand championship, and also first place in forms, breaking and sparring. Purple belt Rockne Helms won the adult grand championship in forms and also took first place in board breaking.

Cody Wirz: 1st place, youth yellow belt board breaking; 2nd place, youth yellow belt sparring.

Belmont do-jang in Van Sant movie

Oscar-winning film director Gus Van Sant selected the Belmont do-jang for a scene in his new movie and filmed inside the do-jang on Dec. 12. The scene involved a fencing lesson. The movie, whose title had been "Restless" but is undergoing a name change, stars Mia Wasikowska, Henry Hopper and Schuyler Fisk.

Students Earn Black Belts

Quinz Wade, the head instructor at the Buckman School SUN taekwon-do program, gained his 2nd Dan on Dec. 5, topping off the promotion test with an impressive board break--a triple jumping front kick.

Promoting to 1st Dan were Isaiah Lindsey, Melissa Lindsay (both from the Belmont do-jang) and Nue Ching Cha from North Portland.

Belmont do-jang lease renewed for five more years

A new lease with the Robert A. Bitar Corp. was signed today, guaranteeing that the Belmont do-jang of Traditional Taekwon-do Kwan will remain in its current location for another five years. With the new lease, we will be able to start making some improvements both sinside and outside the building, including a front window, new exterior paint and new floor covering in the back hallway and dressing room. Most of this work will begin next spring and summer.

Black belts participate in college power study

Six black belts from Traditional Taekwon-do Kwan participated in a senior class project by Pacific University students that measured the force of various martial arts hand techniques. The black belts were Gil Johnson,Mark Lockie,  Isaac Willis, Vance Perry, Elisha Patterson and Irina Alonso. 

The Pacific students brought a digital device connected to a punching pad and measured the force of the following kinds of strikes: reverse punch, inward knifehand strike, outward knifeahnd strike, crossing backfist, front elbow strike, back elbow strike and downward elbow strike.

Mr. Willis had the highest power score the Pacific students have seen to date by registering a blow equal to 3500 Newtons (approximately 900 pounds per square inch) with a downward elbow strike.

 Patterson wins Grand Champion at NW Regional Tournament

Elisha Patterson won the adult black belt grand champion trophy at the Pacific Northwest Taekwon-do Championship Tournament, sponsored by Bettencourt;s Taekwon-do America. Mr. Patterson, a 2nd Dan and instructor at the Belmont do-jang, took first place in forms and breaking, and second place in sparring.

Purple belt Rockne Helms also represented Traditional Taekwon-do Kwan at the tournament and won first place in sparring and forms.

 Tournament nets Hwa-Rang Foundation $1,000-plus

More than $1,000 was raised at the Hwa-Rang Foundation Invitational Tournament held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Father Paul Schroeder, pastor of the church, is the incoming Hwa-Rang president. The foundation provides scholarships to low income children studying martial arts.

Isaac Willis, 2nd Dan,  won the adult grand champion trophy for the second consecutive year at this tournament. Sean Kealiher of White Tiger Martial Arts was the children's grand champion, while Marcia Giles of Shudokan Karate of Milwaukie won the colored belts forms grand champion trophy.

 Four Belmont students earn black belts.

Congratulations to Lisa Casey, Ron Milligan, Emily O'Loughlin and Ally Shuel. whol all successfully tested for black belt. Observers at the test said the four performances were among the best they had seen at a traditional taewkon-do black belt test.
