This Monday, January 21,
is a national holiday celebrating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.
Dr. King engaged in a heroic
struggle for peace and justice in America and throughout the world.
His indomitable spirit represents the ideal of a true martial artist.
A martial art trains students in physical self-defense that can at times
be brutal, but the underlying philosophy of a good martial art is to resolve
conflict peacefully and treat all people equally.
Therefore, in honor of Dr.
King, the Belmont do-jang will remain open for all classes on Monday.

Do taekwon-do in the sun and surf at our annual beach campout and workout. All taekown-do students, friends and family welcome. We will do a workout Saturday evening at 6 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner, campfire and hot dog/marshmallow roast. Sunday morning, we will do another workout at 11 a.m., followed by brunch. In between, there are plenty of hiking trails to explore Cape Lookout, as well as the other capes west of Tillamook. Cape Lookout is also a short drive to the picturesque town of Oceanside. In addition to the scheduled workouts, students will be able to train in small groups during the weekend on the beach. We will be doing work on self-defense moves, joint locks pressure points and takedowns. We
will be staying in Group Campsite A, which has a capacity for 25 overnight
campers. (See map on back). IThe group site is now full, but you can stay
in one of the individual sites and make your own reservations, stay in
a motel in either Netarts or Oceanside, or just drive down for the day.

Fliers are located at Mr. Johnson's studio Call Elaine P-A (503.939.9478) or Jessica Ruch (503.890.4638) if you can volunteer. Ways you can volunteer without spending the night February 25th and 26th… 1. Donate $ for pizza, snacks, drinks, breakfast bars, paper towels, plates 2. Donate some of the pizza, snacks (no candy), drink boxes, breakfast bars, fruit, paper towels, plates 3. Donate some of your time by running an activity Examples : group games, dancing, story telling, yoga, art project (not too messy)…be creative and let me know YOUR ideas, does not have to involve TKD. 4. Donate your time by coming and taking photos of the event. You don't have to stay the whole night, just as long as you can or want to (hour or two). 5. Donate a video (lcd) projector so we can run a late night movie. It will be locked away when it's not being used and we will only use it for a couple hours. 6. Donate your time Sunday morning to help clean up the do-jang! More volunteers, less time it takes to clean! 7. Get friends, family, neighbors involved if they have a service that would be useful to this fundraiser. 8.
Lastly, well probably not, but for now, ALWAYS keep the Hwa-Rang Foundation
in mind for donations anytime of the year. ALL donations are tax
deductible!

We now are holding an Open
class on Sundays at 5 p.m. It is open to all students who have progressed
beyond the beginners class.
Tournament Set for February 18 Mr. Hansen is holding a "friendship tournament" on February 18 at the Banks Community Center. The scope of this tournament is smaller than the championship tournaments held in the fall and spring. Some events, such as synchronized forms, will not be held. Cost for the tournament is $18 if registration is received by Feb. 11 and $20 afterward. We regret a typographical error in an e-mail to students that indicated there would be a new event. There will be no boar breaking at this tournament. There will, however, be board breaking, as well as sparring and forms.

Congratulations to Jessica O'Loughlin, Hannah Huynh, Aden Winkelman and Elisha Patterson for earning their 1st Dan black belts and to Kris Murray for earning his 2nd Dan black belt. All candidates performed admirably. For Kris, getting to 2nd Dan occured a year later than he had expected. After graduating in engineering from Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls in 2004, Kris was hired that fall by Intel and sent to its Folsom, CA divisionn (near Sacramento). As a new hire, he was unable to get time to come back to Portland for his test, scheduled a year ago. He did return during vacations, however, and worked out enough on his own to keep up his skills. On Friday, he drove up from California and was ready to test on Saturday. Colored belts who passed their tests: John Wagoner, white belt
to 2nd yellow

Even though we don't gear our training to tournament competition, our emphasis on strong fundamentals serves our students well when they do enter tournaments. Often, the toughest competition for our students comes from their fellow students. This was particularly true among women black belts at Mr. Cullen Loeffler's White Tiger Invitational held Dec. 4 at the East Portland Community Center. Here are the results: Grand Champion in Hyungs,
adult colored belt: Elisha Patterson
